The Biblical Meaning of Snakes in Dreams

It is usually believed that the snake is your enemy. We just need to look at the serpent in the Bible who tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. The snake is deceitful and can easily lead us astray. The deceit could be within ourselves or it could be from an enemy. Perhaps you are the deceiver, or maybe somebody else is deceiving you. You have to look at the dream as a whole to get the true meaning.

The snake or serpent is ever-present in the Bible and you will find many mentions of these creatures. They are a fascinating symbol although generally negative to dream about. However, this is not always the case and in this article, we will look at the different scenarios in which we might see snakes and how they connect to the Bible.

Sigmund Freud, the famous dream psychologist, believed that what we dream about is connected to what goes on in our waking life. However, if we look at the biblical meaning of snakes in dreams, there are other things we need to take into consideration. The snake in the Bible can have either negative or occasionally positive traits, but most of all, it always denotes transformation. This is made more poignant when we think that snakes shed their skin.

The snake in the Bible is often referred to be poisonous or evil. The symbol of the snake is often associated with intrigue. In scripture, there are 11 Hebrew and 4 Greek names that are associated with snakes.

In our waking life, many of us are conditioned to fear snakes, but some people will have snakes as pets. In addition, not all snakes are venomous and are harmless.

Battling Dark Forces in Your Dream

Perhaps you have had a dream where you see yourself fighting a snake. It can mean that you are feeling emotional. If you look at Psalms 6:6, you will see snakes biting feet, and perhaps this is what is happening to you in your dream. The feet can be symbolized as the gateway to the soul so perhaps something is battling your soul in your waking life. Maybe somebody is trying to question your religion.

If you have a dream about a multitude of snakes, it can mean that you are facing a spiritual battle. You could be fighting dark forces in real life. You could be tempted to do something that would hurt other people.

The Snake as a Symbol of Satan

The snake symbolizes Satan or the enemy of God. The first time Satan is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 3 when he tempts Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. As this is written close to the beginning of the Bible, the snake becomes a symbol of evil that runs through both the Old Testament and the New Testament. It is made clear that a snake is not to be trusted, so if you do have a dream of one, beware.

The Impact of Snakes on Others

If we look at Numbers 21 in the Bible, we can read an important story about snakes. The Israelites keep complaining about everything, so the Lord sends snakes to punish them. These people even spoke against God and his prophet, Moses. In this verse, we see Moses with a bronze snake on a stick and then the snakes come to bite the Israelites. In verse 21.5, God allows the snakes to kill them and we can wonder if this is the action of a loving and just God. We often come across people that complain, but the majority of us wouldn’t dream about killing them. However, God gave the Israelites a reprieve. He said that each person who had been bitten by a snake would be allowed to live if he or she looked at the bronze statue belonging to Moses. There is a deeper meaning to this story and that is that God asked the Israelites to consider how their complaints affected others. This can make us think about how we are impacting our friends and family by complaining. Are we alienating the people we love?

Another time that a snake is mentioned in the Bible is in John 3:14-15. Here Jesus Christ is compared to a snake by dying on a cross to save the people who love him. This image is both negative and positive. It is negative because Jesus had to suffer and die, but by doing this he brought healing to many people and so the outcome is positive.

The Snake as a Symbol of Strength

The Bible contains many metaphors which can be hard to interpret. In the same way, the snake is surrounded by metaphors. It is regarded as something representative and symbolic of other things.

In the Bible, in chapter 30 verses 18-19,  snakes are mentioned who seem to stand out from others. They are slithering all over a rock meaning that they symbolize strength. However, they also represent deceit. If you have a dream such as this, you need to consider who is the snake in your life. Someone isn’t being honest with you and you will have to do some digging to find out who this is. They might think that they are strong and forceful, but you can be like that as well.

Dreaming of Snakes Biting You

It is quite common to dream about snakes biting you. After all, that’s one of the most prominent features of a snake’s actions. If you have a dream where this happens, it means that evil is knocking at your door. It could be somebody wanting to do you physical harm or to cause mental distress.

In the Bible, there are instances of snakes biting people. We have already mentioned Numbers 21:5 but in Ecclesiastes 10:8b NIV,  there is a verse that goes like this,; ‘Whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.’ This is a very obscure symbol but it could mean that if we break through someone’s defenses, we may meet something unexpected and it may not be good. Another meaning would be literal. If you break into a house with designs on robbing it, you could be caught and put in prison.

In the Bible, the snake plays different roles. Firstly, he is described as evil and Satan is mentioned many times. However, he is also described as a savior of people who brings healing and wisdom.

Snakes in Dreams and Their Biblical Meaning

Snakes in dreams can be either positive or negative. They are negative because they are often portrayed as Satan in such cases as the Garden of Eden. Another instance of the snake being evil is in the Wisdom of Solomon. Here Christ Jesus made the snake legless to punish him. However, in reality, a snake can slither just as quickly as somebody on foot. However, snakes are also positive as we have mentioned and you will have to take the dream as a whole to decide whether your snake is a positive symbol or a negative one.

The snake is not only an important symbol in the Bible. It also has great importance in the religions of Greece, Mesopotamia, and Egypt.

Advice About Snakes in Dreams

If you dream about a snake, it can mean that you have to watch people in your life and those just entering it. Somebody could be planning to do you harm and there’s no way you would expect it of them. The chances are high that this person will be a close friend or family member who knows what your weaknesses are. The dream is telling you that this will be a complete surprise to you. It will upset you because you have gone through a lot with that person and you will find it difficult to understand their actions.

Alternatively, if you dream about a snake, it can mean that something negative could happen. Perhaps your partner will break up with you. Maybe you will lose your job. Perhaps you will be robbed. Maybe you can’t pay your mortgage this month. You need to protect yourself and remain strong so that you can face up to this danger. This is even more likely to happen if the snake is large such as a python. Try not to worry too much that people dislike you or are jealous of you. It happens to the best of us. However, the dream is not entirely negative as Karma will take place and the people who wronged you will be paid back. Remember not to do anything yourself, but allow Karma to happen naturally. Stay hopeful. Life won’t be like this forever. It will get better and you will have some luck.

To see a small snake warns of unpleasant developments on either a professional or personal front. Somebody might have done something for their own benefit without considering you. However, again this person will face Karma. A small snake can also indicate that someone is acting recklessly. If it is you, you need to calm down and work through your problem. If it’s someone else, you need to advise the person to help them stop. Perhaps they are drinking or smoking too much.
