Cockroaches are thigmotropic. This means that they like something solid on each side of their bodies. This is why they go into the smallest cracks in buildings. Many people seal these tracks so that the cockroaches will die. This is because they can survive for only one to two weeks without water. They can get this from condensation and leaks. However, they can survive for months without food so it is best to cut off their water supply. 

As we have said, they live in groups of up to 1,000. They leave a trail so that they can meet up with each other. When they poop, they eject chemicals which makes it easy for the cockroaches to find each other. They like living in groups and searching for food together. When they find food, they will send out signals to the rest of the group so that they can all feast on the food.  They are cold-blooded so can keep their metabolism at the lowest level. In this way, they can survive without food for longer. It will probably make you retch, but according to records, the home with the most cockroaches had 20,000 of them.

Cockroaches are found in all the continents of the world, apart from Antarctica because it is too cold for them there. In the US, there are just 70 species of cockroach out of the possible 4,600. Only five of these invade homes and the rest of them are found in caves, grasslands, forests, and swamps. 

Young cockroaches grow up quickly. They start off as eggs wrapped in an ootheca, a protective case. The female carries this around until the young are due to be born. The most common species of cockroach in the US is the German cockroach which can carry up to 40 eggs so you can see how quickly they can breed.
