Dreams About Witches

Witches appearing in your dream can be broadly positive or negative signs, just as the symbol of a witch can be interpreted differently, depending on the context. When we tend to think of witches, we imagine black pointy hats and dresses, brooms and warts and hooked noses. I think we can all blame Halloween for this image. In folklore and mythology, witches can either be a force for good or bad, and they’re usually portrayed as someone who lives as an outsider, their knowledge, wisdom or actions setting them apart from others.

In Nyakyusa in southern Tanzania, witches were integral to the Nyakyusa people’s world view. They believed that witches were people who intended to harm others and their cattle, and flew on pythons. They designated ‘defenders’, who were able to recognize and fight witches within their dreams, preventing harm from befalling their people.

For the sake of finding the meaning behind your dream, I’ll leave you with something to ponder. While people were persecuted for “witchcraft” in trials which covered a blanket of excuses from hatred, political reasons, because they could, or the victim simply being “too knowledgeable” and therefore should be feared, I wonder how much medical and botanical knowledge we lost as a result. Is your dream a sign you’re rejecting a wise part of yourself, because you don’t want to hear what you have to say?

Dreaming About Witches

Dreams about witches can signify good or bad luck, or a crossroads within a spiritual journey, as witches are portrayed as being spiritual beings who can affect things both positively and negatively. Sleep can allow us to ‘reconnect’ with our innermost selves, allowing thoughts and feelings to surface which wouldn’t during the day as we are preoccupied with waking life, and don’t usually dwell on things too hard. The symbolism of witchcraft has moved from something wholly unknown and ‘evil’, to something that can also be the pursuit of knowledge and spirituality. This isn’t one of those dreams where you’re seeking to find something or trying to make sense of something. A dream involving a witch or magic is associated with taking steps to heal, or a transformation of sorts.

What does it Mean to Dream of Being a Victim of Witchcraft?

Dreaming of being a victim at the hands of witches suggests there’s a threat in your waking life. You might not have recognized what it is, but your subconscious is already feeling watched enough to create this dream. The witchcraft in your dream could symbolize a belief, a situation, or a person that may be threatening your beliefs or way of life. Chances are, if you feel like a victim in your dream, this is a feeling stemming from real life.

Is This Dream Bad?

If you dream of ‘being’ the witch, this signifies that you have the power to stop this threat in its tracks. You have been entertaining a more negative outlook or reverting to old habits, both of which are in your power to solve. Dreaming of being the victim signifies that you will have to weather the storm. It won’t be in your power to change, but it is up to you as to how you react to it.

What is My Dream Trying to Tell Me?

While dreaming of witches can be both positive and negative signs, it’s important to pay attention to how you felt in the dream in order to determine which it was. You might not have to remember very hard. Your dream of witches can suggest something awful in your future, or signify a period of healing or owning your actions and using your choices for good.  This dream is connecting you with your innermost self, and the problems or solutions which lie within.

Witches in your dreams can stand for intuition, intelligence, healing or transformation, as well as someone who is deceiving, manipulative, or a negative force in your life. It may suggest you need to do some reflecting or introspection, as you may have already thought of the answer to a problem, but you haven’t quite realized it’s the solution just yet. Your dream signifies that you’re in the right place to confront your fears or someone negative in your life, or you might feel the opposite, where your problems are too big to deal with, right now.

Witches hold the interpretation of power and magic (see also Magic Dream Symbolism), and for some, the belief of magic is the belief in one’s power to be able to change their lives, or the lives of those around them.

Only you will be able to tell which interpretation fits with your dream of witches.

Dreaming of seeing a witch and not witnessing them do any kind of magic is a good omen for the future. A project you have been working on will turn out to be better than you imagined when you set out. A new relationship will lead to new opportunities and may define a new you. Work will recognize all the effort you’ve put in and reward you accordingly. Someone will trust you on a deeper level. This dream is an indication you’ll soon enjoy a run of good luck in your life. At this stage, you may be asking but what if the witch wasn’t good? Is it still a good dream? Keep reading to find out.

  • Dreams of witches attacking you: after this dream, you may feel victimized or attacked, and usually this mirrors the same feelings in your waking life. This could be an indication of skewed self-esteem or self-confidence – perhaps your opinion of yourself is flawed, and doesn’t match who you really are.
  • Dreams of witches chasing you: this dream is your subconscious telling you to act with your inner strength or power. It may be connected to your belief system and how you relate to others. They might be kind and considerate right now, but for one reason or another, they’ll cause you some problems soon. Maybe they’re not as kind as they want you to think, or they’ll make a mistake which will cost both of you.  Alternatively, something which you’ve long hoped for will come true, exactly the way you wanted it, but time will prove it won’t suit you. This may be a new relationship, a change in your career, or a new hobby, but you’ll find your way without it. You have before.

This dream is disorientating, to say the least! You may wake up and look at them suspiciously! This dream may not suggest anything bad about your partner, but it can indicate there’s someone in your life that wants you to fail at something.
